The directive came days after fresh attacks in Zamfara left security personnel dead and a local government chairman abducted from his home.
Speaking during a condolence visit to victims of the recent attacks in Bungudu and other affected communities, Matawalle said the renewed violence would not be tolerated. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring peace across the region.
According to a statement signed by his Personal Assistant on Media, Ahmed Dan Wudil, the minister described the latest incidents as unfortunate and painful. He assured residents that the ongoing military campaign would be sustained and intensified until the terrorists are dismantled.
Matawalle specifically instructed the leadership of Operation Fansan Yamma, the military task force covering the North-West, to remain firm and aggressive in the fight against terrorism.
He also ordered all military formations involved in counter-terrorism operations in Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto and Kaduna to step up action immediately.
The minister said troops must deploy “every lawful and necessary measure” to destroy terrorist networks, their supply lines, and hideouts. He emphasized that the operations should be swift, targeted, and without leniency.
Senior commanders in the most volatile areas have been directed to increase surveillance, expand patrols, and preempt attacks by destroying bandit camps before they can be used to launch further assaults.
Beyond military action, Matawalle appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to cooperate with security agencies.
He said credible and timely intelligence is critical to winning the war. Residents were urged to report anyone suspected of providing information, food, fuel, or logistics to the terrorists who have been attacking rural communities.
He noted that the success of the campaign depends not only on the military, but also on the willingness of communities to deny bandits shelter and support.
The minister praised the Armed Forces and other security personnel for their bravery and sacrifices. He specifically highlighted recent operations in Zamfara where troops neutralized several terrorists in Gummi, Bukkuyum, Anka and Tsafe. Similar successes were recorded in Faskari, Katsina State, and other flashpoints.
Matawalle said the gallantry shown by the troops is proof that the terrorists can be defeated if the momentum is sustained.
He urged the soldiers to keep pushing until terrorism is completely rooted out of the North-West and other affected parts of the country. He also offered prayers for the continued success and safety of security personnel in the field.
The directive follows Saturday’s attack in Zamfara where gunmen killed policemen and abducted the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area from his residence. The incident sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger government action.
Residents have continued to demand better protection, faster response times, and better coordination between the military and local vigilantes.
Matawalle concluded by assuring Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to ending banditry and restoring lasting peace and stability across the North-West.
