Abuja, Sept. 29, 2026 (NAN) Mr. Muhammad Bello Bala Shagari of Nigeria has been elected Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organisation (NAMYO) for the 2026-2029 term.
The organisation made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Shagari, who previously served as Vice Chair for the African Region and National Chapter Representative of Nigeria, emerged from an election held on Tuesday.
He defeated candidates from Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Uzbekistan and Qatar in the election.
NAMYO had earlier announced the five candidates for the election, which was scheduled to determine its leadership for the 2026-2029 term.
Shagari endorsement was conveyed by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, which described Shagari, the National Representative of NAMYO Nigeria and Vice Chair for the Africa Region, as a distinguished youth leader with an impressive record of service, youth development and international diplomacy.
The Ministry said Shagari’s experience, integrity and leadership capacity, as well as his contributions to youth participation, international cooperation and constructive engagement among young people, make him eminently qualified to serve the organisation in a higher capacity.
Shagari, a former President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), is widely recognised as one of Nigeria’s most prominent youth leaders. He has played active roles in youth advocacy, international relations and youth diplomacy, both nationally and internationally.
NAMYO was established in 2022, following a recommendation by the Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement, and is headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The organisation brings together young people across the 121 member states of the Non-Aligned Movement, with a mandate to promote youth cooperation, leadership, peacebuilding, sustainable development and international solidarity.
Following the election, the organisation congratulated Bala-Shagari and wished him success in his new role.
It also thanked all National Chapter Representatives who participated in the voting and commended all the candidates for their commitment to the organisation.
Shagari will serve as Chair of NAMYO for the 2026-2029 term.
