APC Risks Losing Zamfara in 2027 – Prof Abubakar

A political analyst in Zamfara State, Prof. Abubakar Ahmed Abdullahi, has warned that the All Progressives Congress, APC, may lose Zamfara State in the 2027 general elections following the resignation of eight members of the State House of Assembly from the party.

The eight lawmakers announced their resignation from the APC on Sunday. They complained of worsening insecurity in their constituencies, injustice, internal crisis within the party, and non-payment of their salaries and allowances for over two years.

The lawmakers who left the APC are Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, Hon. Ibrahim Tukur Bakura, Hon. Faruk Musa Dosara, Hon. Bashir Abubakar Masama, Hon. Muktaru Nasiru Kaura, Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi, Hon. Bashar Bello and Hon. Bashar Aliyu.

Reacting to the development, Prof. Abdullahi said the exit of the lawmakers is a big blow to the APC in Zamfara and a sign that all is not well within the party in the state.

According to him, the resignation will have serious consequences for the political future of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor Abdulaziz Yari, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and even the state Governor, Dauda Lawal, ahead of 2027.

He blamed Governor Lawal for not doing enough to calm the crisis that started in the State House of Assembly.

"Right from the time crisis broke in the state House of Assembly, the governor needed to call for calm and understanding but instead, he fuelled it for his own benefit," the analyst said.

Abdullahi said several efforts to reconcile the governor with the aggrieved lawmakers failed and the lawmakers and their constituencies have been completely neglected. He also said the affected lawmakers claimed they have not been paid for 32 months.

The political analyst also expressed worry over the ongoing rivalry between the political camps of former Governor Yari and former Governor Matawalle, saying the division will make it difficult for the APC to prepare for the 2027 elections.

"If the camps that have been existing in favour of Yari on the one hand and in favour of Matawalle on the other is anything to go by, then the bigger picture is the trouble that lies ahead against Tinubu's return in 2027," he said.

He warned that President Tinubu may fail woefully in Zamfara in 2027 if the leaders of the APC in the state refuse to settle their differences.

"If care is not taken, I vividly foresee a Tinubu failing woefully in Zamfara State in the next election just because some few individuals refuse to do their part and responsibility to bring the needed results which they have always boasted of," he added.

Prof. Abdullahi noted that the resignation of the eight lawmakers cuts across the three senatorial zones of the state, which makes it more dangerous for the APC.

Five of the lawmakers are from Zamfara West Senatorial District, which is the zone of Senator Yari. One of them, Hon. Kagara, represents Talata Mafara South, which is Yari's local government and a very important political base for the former governor. Hon. Ibrahim Tukur Bakura is from Bakura, the home of former Governor Ahmad Sani Yarima.

Hon. Faruk Dosara of Maradun I is from Matawalle's own constituency, while Hon. Bashir Masama of Bukkuyum North shares the same area with Deputy Governor Mani Malam Mumuni. Hon. Bashar Aliyu of Gummi I is from the constituency of the APC Elders Committee Chairman, Salihu Maibuhu Gummi.

In Zamfara Central, Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi of Maru North also resigned, and Hon. Basiru Bello of Bungudu West. In Zamfara North, Hon. Mukhtar Nasiru of Kaura Namoda North resigned.

The analyst said this development will affect many serving federal and state lawmakers whose political structures depend on those constituencies.

It would be recalled that the eight lawmakers have been on suspension since February 2024. They said their suspension was because they raised concerns over insecurity, while the Speaker, Bilyaminu Moriki, said on Monday that they were suspended for gross misconduct, conspiracy, contempt of the House and holding an illegal sitting, including breaking into offices and damaging public property. Their suspension was extended in May 2026.

Meanwhile, the Zamfara APC said it has not officially received their resignation letters and is waiting for official communication through their wards.

Prof. Abdullahi therefore called on President Tinubu to urgently intervene by calling Yari, Matawalle and Governor Lawal to a roundtable meeting to reorganise the APC in Zamfara and save the party from losing the state in 2027.
