The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Zamfara State has raised concerns over what it describes as persistent difficulties in securing a meeting with Governor Dauda Lawal to discuss issues affecting Christians in the state.
The association alleged that some government officials have been preventing its leadership from meeting with the governor, despite repeated efforts to arrange an opportunity for dialogue.
According to CAN, the situation has made it difficult for its leaders to directly present their concerns to the state government and seek the governor’s intervention on matters affecting the Christian community.
The association reportedly expressed concern that, throughout the three years of Governor Lawal’s administration, it has struggled to obtain an audience with him.
The development has raised questions about communication between the state government and religious organisations, particularly regarding the need for dialogue, mutual understanding and the protection of the interests of different religious communities.
CAN’s leadership is seeking an opportunity to meet with the governor to discuss the challenges confronting Christians in Zamfara State and explore possible ways the government could address their concerns.
A direct meeting with the governor would provide an opportunity for the association to explain its position, present its grievances and engage the government on issues it considers important to the Christian community.
However, the allegations concerning government officials’ actions would need to be addressed by the relevant authorities. A response from the Zamfara State Government would also help clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported difficulty in arranging the meeting.
The matter highlights the importance of maintaining open channels of communication between government officials and religious leaders, especially in a state where constructive engagement can help strengthen peaceful coexistence among different communities.
