In a statement issued on Tuesday, BoT Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa said recent developments, including last Friday’s judgment of the Federal High Court, have provided clarity and direction for the opposition party. According to the BoT, the judgment aligns with earlier pronouncements of the Supreme Court and should settle doubts among members who are yet to accept the current leadership structure.
The BoT described the court decision as a major step toward restoring stability within the party.
“The period of uncertainty is over”
Senator Ohuabunwa said the PDP has moved past the phase of internal wrangling that dominated public discourse in recent months. He noted that the Board of Trustees, as the conscience and moral compass of the party, remains committed to upholding the constitution of the PDP and the rule of law.
“The last Friday judgment of the Federal High Court should be enough for those who are yet to accept the reality of a new PDP to beat a retreat,” the statement read. “As BoT, we fully respect and accept the Federal High Court judgment and will continue to respect the rule of law.”
The BoT Chairman also addressed the issue of parallel leadership claims within the party. He described any individual parading as Chairman of the BoT outside the recognized structure as a criminal impersonator, and warned that such persons would face legal consequences.
“Impersonation will not be tolerated. The law will take its course soon,” Ohuabunwa stated.
Focus on rebuilding and unity
With the legal disputes now addressed, the BoT said attention has shifted to internal rebuilding, reconciliation and preparation for future elections.
Ohuabunwa called on party leaders across the 36 states and the FCT to embrace reconciliation and collective responsibility. He stressed that division would only weaken the PDP at a time when Nigerians are looking to the opposition for credible alternatives.
“The PDP must remain focused on strengthening its internal structures,” he said. “Our goal is to come out stronger and better, and to present a united front ahead of 2027.”
The BoT assured members and supporters that steps are already being taken to enhance party unity, improve coordination among organs, and reposition the PDP for upcoming electoral engagements. These include consultations with stakeholders, engagement with aggrieved members, and efforts to restore confidence at the grassroots level.
Party leaders have been urged to prioritize dialogue over confrontation and to work toward healing divisions that emerged during the period of litigation.
Looking ahead to 2027
Political observers say the PDP’s ability to resolve its internal crisis will be critical to its performance in the 2027 general elections. The party, which ruled Nigeria for 16 years, has faced challenges with factional disputes, defections, and leadership tussles since 2015.
With the BoT now projecting stability, the focus is expected to shift to policy direction, candidate selection, and grassroots mobilization.
Senator Ohuabunwa reiterated that the PDP remains a party with deep roots across the country and the capacity to provide leadership. He called on members to put the interest of the party above personal ambition.
“As the conscience of the party, the BoT will continue to provide guidance and ensure that the PDP adheres to democratic principles,” the statement added. “We are rebuilding, and Nigerians will see a stronger PDP in the months ahead.”
The BoT concluded by assuring supporters that the party leadership is committed to transparency, internal democracy, and delivering on the expectations of members ahead of the next electoral cycle.
