The National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, is in mourning following the killing of its Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Marafa, who was reportedly shot dead in Zamfara State.
The incident happened while Marafa was on his way back from Gusau, the state capital. The university confirmed the death on Sunday in a statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi.
“According to information available to the University, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau,” the statement read.
NOUN described the incident as sudden and untimely. The institution said Marafa was a committed staff member who served the university in different capacities over the years before his appointment as Bursar in September 2026 — just days ago.
“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement said.
The university called his death a “profound loss” and extended condolences to his immediate family, friends, colleagues, and the entire NOUN community.
The university did not provide further details about the attack. It remains unclear where exactly in Zamfara the shooting occurred, what led to it, or who was responsible.
Zamfara has in recent months continued to grapple with insecurity along major highways, with travelers often targeted by gunmen. Security agencies are yet to issue a statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
NOUN said burial arrangements would be announced by the family once concluded.
The institution also offered prayers for the repose of Marafa’s soul. “We pray that Allah (SWT) forgives his shortcomings, grants him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and gives his family and the entire NOUN community the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement added.
Colleagues who worked with Marafa described him as humble, diligent, and passionate about the growth of the university. His appointment as Bursar was seen as a new chapter in his service to the institution.
The death has thrown the NOUN community into grief, with many staff members expressing shock on social media and in internal memos.
As the university mourns, calls have renewed for improved security for public officials and travelers plying Zamfara roads.
May his soul rest in peace.
