APC To INEC: Apply Sanctions On Parties That Violate Membership Register Law

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to enforce the Supreme Court judgment on the submission of party membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The call was contained in a letter dated October 9, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of INEC, and jointly signed by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and the National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC is drawing INEC's attention to the Supreme Court judgment delivered on September 24, 2026, in the case of INEC v. Zenith Labour Party, which reaffirmed the validity of Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026.

Morka explained that the judgment clearly underscores the statutory obligation of all political parties to submit their membership registers to INEC at least 21 days before their primaries, congresses and conventions.

He noted that the apex court also held that only members whose names appear in the duly submitted register are eligible to vote and be voted for during such internal party processes.

The ruling party therefore called on INEC to verify compliance by all political parties and to apply the statutory consequences for any established violation, without fear or favour.

“The judgment underscores the statutory requirement for political parties to submit their membership registers to INEC at least 21 days before primaries, congresses and conventions. It also provides that only members listed in the duly submitted register are eligible to vote and be voted for in these internal party processes,” the statement said.

The APC stressed that as the country prepares for the 2027 general election, credible elections must begin with transparent and lawful internal democratic processes within political parties.

The party urged the electoral umpire to act promptly to enforce the Supreme Court judgment in order to uphold the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.

“As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Election, the Party emphasised that credible elections require transparent internal democratic processes and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Morka added.

The APC further called on INEC to ensure that the enforcement of the judgment is applied uniformly to all parties to deepen internal democracy and strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
