There was tension in Gwashi town in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Sunday after angry residents reportedly prevented the Deputy Governor, Malam Mani Malam Muminu from entering the community.
The residents, who were visibly furious, were said to have blocked the entrance to the town and shouted "Ba su yi" meaning they have failed, as the deputy governor's convoy attempted to gain access.
Sources from the area told The Spectacles that the community is angry over the recent deadly attack on the town which claimed the lives of at least nine security operatives and several other civilians.
According to the locals, despite the heavy casualties recorded during the attack, no government official visited the town to commiserate with them or assess the situation until now.
They accused the state government of abandoning them at their most difficult moment, only to show up days after the incident.
"The people are angry. We lost nine security personnel and many innocent citizens. Nobody from government came when we were under attack and mourning our people. Now they are here, we don't want them," a resident who asked not to be named said.
The situation reportedly degenerated quickly, forcing the deputy governor and his security details to take cover.
As at the time of filing this report, the deputy governor and his entourage were said to be stranded in the area, waiting for reinforcement to rescue them from the angry mob that had surrounded them.
The atmosphere in Gwashi remains tense, with residents insisting that the government has not done enough to protect lives and property in Bukkuyum LGA, which has become one of the hotspots of banditry in Zamfara State.
Efforts to get official reaction from the Zamfara State Government were still ongoing.
