Former Governor of Zamfara State, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, has risen in defence of President Bola Tinubu over the lingering insecurity in the country, saying even former President Muhammadu Buhari who is a retired Army General could not completely tackle the menace.
Yari stated this on Monday when he visited Kebbi State to mobilise support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former governor, who met with Governor Nasir Idris, traditional rulers and leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state, said President Tinubu has done his best despite not having a military background.
According to him, Nigerians should be fair in assessing the President's efforts on security.
“If a retired general did his best but could not completely tackle insecurity, what do you expect of President Tinubu, who is not a general? Nevertheless, the President has done his utmost best to address the security challenges confronting the country,” Yari said.
He disclosed that his visit to Kebbi was part of efforts to rally support for Tinubu's re-election and other APC candidates in 2027.
Yari commended Governor Idris and other party stakeholders for their unity and mobilisation drive, describing the gathering of emirs under one roof at the Emir of Gwandu’s palace as a laudable effort.
“We are leading the campaign for the President’s re-election and other candidates of our party. We appreciate you for bringing the emirs together under one umbrella at the Emir of Gwandu’s palace.
“We recognise what you are doing as governors and your contributions towards ensuring victory for our party in 2027,” he said.
The former Zamfara governor added that the campaign council is ready to work with all individuals and groups who are committed to the re-election of President Tinubu, irrespective of their positions in the party.
Speaking on the economy, Yari argued that the current hardship being experienced by Nigerians is not peculiar to Nigeria, noting that other countries are also facing similar challenges.
He claimed that inflation has reduced and fertiliser prices have dropped, while pointing to cash transfers to vulnerable Nigerians as part of measures by the Federal Government to cushion the effects of the reforms.
He called on Nigerians to support the development agenda of the Tinubu administration, stressing that tackling insecurity is a collective responsibility that requires the support of all citizens.
In his remarks, Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, reaffirmed the state's unflinching support for President Tinubu and the APC, citing the presence of federal projects in the state.
Idris said Kebbi has no reason not to support the President, given the calibre of prominent leaders from the state in the Tinubu administration, including Senator Atiku Bagudu, Senator Adamu Aliero and Ambassador Saidu Dakingari.
“We have no reason not to support the President. We have prominent leaders such as Sen. Atiku Bagudu, Sen. Adamu Aliero and Amb. Saidu Dakingari.
“You have seen the people of Kebbi and their overwhelming support. We are for the APC and we are for President Tinubu,” the governor said.
