More than 40 armed bandits have reportedly been killed in a deadly infighting that broke out among rival factions in the eastern Mada axis of Zamfara State.
Among those reportedly killed in the clash is a younger brother of notorious bandit kingpin, Ado Alero, popularly known as “Senator.”
The development was disclosed by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who shared the information via his verified X handle on Thursday.
According to Makama, the violent confrontation occurred following escalating tensions among armed groups operating in the eastern part of Mada, a known stronghold of bandit activities in the state.
Security sources and local residents in the area confirmed the clash, although the exact cause of the infighting is yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
Sources in the area said the clash was fierce and lasted for several hours, leaving over 40 fighters dead from both sides.
The reported killing of “Senator,” who is said to be a close ally and blood brother of Ado Alero, is being described as a major setback for the bandit leader’s network if confirmed.
Security analysts believe that the death could further deepen the existing division and rivalry among armed groups operating across Zamfara and neighbouring states, especially over issues of territorial control and leadership tussle.
Preliminary reports indicated that the crisis was triggered by internal disagreements, including disputes over territorial dominance, leadership struggle and competition for resources and ransom proceeds, which have often fuelled hostilities among criminal groups in the North-West.
As of the time of this report, security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while efforts to get more credible details from local sources are ongoing.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
