Zamfara Health Ministry On Red Alert As Unidentified Disease Hits Two LGAs

The Zamfara State Government has raised alarm over a strange unidentified illness that has struck two local government areas of the state, Shinkafi and Zurmi, with 38 cases so far recorded.

According to a situation report released by the State Ministry of Health through its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC), the cases were first reported on October 29, 2025, mostly among adults in Shinkafi town, while a few other cases were recorded in Moriki community of Zurmi Local Government.

The ministry said victims of the strange illness are presenting with worrisome symptoms including high fever, severe headache, loss of appetite, vomiting, body pains, and general body weakness, making many residents panic over what exactly is responsible.

Preliminary clinical assessment by medical experts suggested that the symptoms could be linked to malaria, gastroenteritis, or meningitis, but the ministry stressed that this is not yet conclusive until laboratory investigations are completed to establish the real cause of the outbreak.

To contain the situation, the state government has immediately deployed a multidisciplinary emergency response team led by the Director of Public Health, Yusuf Abubakar, to the affected areas to investigate the cases, strengthen disease surveillance, and prevent further spread of the disease.

The team is currently on ground in health facilities in Shinkafi and Moriki, where they are assessing patients, distributing essential drugs and medical supplies to hospitals, and collecting clinical samples for detailed laboratory analysis in Sokoto.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Maradun, called on residents of the affected communities to remain calm but be vigilant and to immediately report to the nearest health facility if they experience any of the symptoms mentioned.

She warned residents to desist from self-medication, as it could worsen their condition, and appealed for full cooperation with health officials while investigations and response activities are ongoing to bring the situation under control.
