There is growing concern in Zamfara State over the continued captivity of six imams who were abducted by bandits 41 days after attending a special prayer gathering organized for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The imams, were reportedly kidnapped on their way back from the prayer session. It was gathered that the prayer gathering was convened by the Director General of the Tinubu Campaign in Zamfara, former Governor Abdulaziz Yari, to pray for the success of President Tinubu's administration.
However, 41 days after their abduction, the whereabouts of the imams remain unknown, with their families and the Muslim community living in anxiety and fear.
Sources in the state said the abductors are yet to establish contact with the families, making the situation more worrisome.
What has further angered residents is the alleged silence of both the Federal and Zamfara State Governments over the incident. According to concerned indigenes, no official statement has been issued regarding efforts to secure their release.
They also accused the convener of the prayer session, Abdulaziz Yari, of abandoning the imams, saying he has not spoken publicly about their plight since the abduction.
"No one among them is talking about them since then. Federal Government is silent, state government is also silent, not to talk of the DG Campaign, Abdulaziz Yari that invited them to the prayer which led to their abduction," a source lamented.
The families of the abducted imams are appealing to the Federal Government, the Zamfara State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims unharmed.
They also called on prominent Islamic scholars and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene and lend their voices to ensure the safe return of the imams.
As of the time of filing this report, the Zamfara State Police Command is yet to issue any statement on the current situation, while efforts to reach the camp of former Governor Yari proved abortive.
The abduction has once again highlighted the worsening insecurity in Zamfara State, where bandits have continued to terrorize communities despite ongoing military operations.
